Second Busiest Cruise Port in the World, Canaveral Port Authority, Selects NICE IP-based Video Surveillance SolutionBy CJ Elias-West, NICE Systems The Canaveral Port Authority, the second busiest cruise port in the world, will be deploying a NiceVision Net IP video surveillance solution as part of an upgrade to modernize its security infrastructure. The NiceVision Net solution will be used to monitor waterside and landside areas to enhance Port security and passenger safety. The NICE solution was purchased through GTSI, a leading government contractor, and will be installed by systems integrator Bryant Integrated Technologies. The Canaveral Port Authority selected NICE Systems for its reputation as a leader in transportation security. In my contacts with other security professionals in seaports, airports, and industrial security, NICE was always on the top of the list and consistently mentioned, so I knew NICE would meet our stringent requirements, said JR Klaman, director of public safety for the Canaveral Port Authority. When fully deployed, the NiceVision Net solution will replace the Ports current analog system with an enterprise-class, high availability open platform IP video surveillance system. The NiceVision Net solution includes network video recorders (NVRs), intelligent edge devices (encoders), a Virtual Matrix (for video wall management) and NiceVision ControlCenter which will help Port Canaverals operators detect, verify, resolve and investigate security events quickly and effectively. The Ports NiceVision Net system features the NVE1002/XT encoder, a highly resilient extended temperature encoding device that stands up to harsh, outdoor environmental conditions. The systems open architecture also enables seamless integration to third party sensors, access control devices, cameras, keyboards and security software. Klaman expects to improve security and boost efficiency once the system is implemented. Instead of doing all of the monitoring manually with our eyes as we do today, well have the ability to set parameters in the system so it can automatically detect and alert our operators when people or objects enter sensitive areas, he said. About the Canaveral Port Authority Located in Brevard County, Florida, Port Canaveral is the second busiest cruise Port in the world serving 4.6 million cruise passengers annually. Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean International, and Norwegian Cruise Line are some of the cruise lines which regularly dock at one of the six Port Canaveral cruise terminals. Port Canaveral is also a world-class deep water Port, with more than three million short tons of bulk cargo moving through the Port each year. At more than 5 square miles, Port Canaveral’s Foreign Trade Zone is among the largest general purpose FTZs in the United States. The Port also plays an important role in support of the NASA Space Shuttle project. The Space Shuttle’s external tanks are floated into Port Canaveral for each mission from their fabrication facility in Mississippi, and the solid rocket boosters are towed back through Port Canaveral after being fished out of the Atlantic Ocean after each launch.
